Elim Ruwangwe Community Health Day Set to Transform Lives – Dr. Jokwiro

5 min read

Ruwangwe — ZimSmart Villages, in collaboration with Ziso Health, is set to host a transformative health initiative—the Elim Ruwangwe Community Health Day on the 13th of September 2025, from 8 AM to 4PM, at Elim Church centre in Ruwangwe, Nyanga North Constituency.

This initiative comes at a time when communities across Zimbabwe are striving to improve public health outcomes and reduce preventable illnesses through early detection, screening, and education.

Nyanga North Member of the National Assembly Hon. Chido Sanyatwe appreciated the initiative by Dr. Jokwiro and his team, saying, “By bringing vital health services directly to the people, the event seeks to digitize, modernize, and decentralize healthcare in line with ZimSmart Villages’ mission of “Digitizing One Village at a Time, So Others May Live.” She added that, “This noble initiative is in line with the vision of the Second Republic led by the President, His Excellency Dr. ED. Mnangagwa of leaving no one and no place behind.”

One of the most striking aspects of the Elim Ruwangwe Community Health Day is its focus on affordability and inclusivity.

In many rural districts, access to specialized healthcare such as eye care, cancer screening, and chronic disease monitoring is limited, often forcing residents to travel long distances at high costs.

To bridge this gap, all services at the Ruwangwe health day will be subsidized, with a nominal eye consultation fee set at just USD $10. This model ensures that no one is left behind due to financial constraints.

Subsidization of fees will enable more people to benefit from early diagnosis and timely intervention.

The event is designed to cater to a wide spectrum of health needs, offering a one-stop shop for critical screenings and consultations.

Services include on offer include, but are not limited to the following,

Prescribed Spectacles – Providing affordable, high-quality spectacles to those with vision impairment.

Comprehensive Eye Exams – Early detection of eye-related conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and refractive errors.

Reading Spectacles – Tailored solutions for those struggling with near vision.

Cataract Extraction Bookings – Facilitating referrals and bookings for cataract surgery to restore sight.

Blood Pressure (BP) and Sugar Checks – Monitoring for hypertension and diabetes, two of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in Zimbabwe.

Cervical Cancer Screening – Life-saving tests for early detection of cervical cancer among women.

Breast Cancer Screening – Awareness and preliminary screening to reduce late-stage breast cancer diagnoses.

Prostate Cancer Screening – Offering men the opportunity to check their health status and reduce risks associated with late detection.

This comprehensive approach reflects an understanding of the diverse health challenges faced by communities, while promoting a culture of preventive healthcare.

The choice of Elim Church Centre as the venue is not accidental. Churches in Zimbabwe, particularly in rural settings, have long served as community hubs where people gather, share information, and support one another.

By leveraging these familiar spaces, ZimSmart Villages, local leadership and its partners ensure that the health services are easily accessible to all, including those who may hesitate to visit distant clinics or hospitals.

The program is further strengthened by the support of strategic partners, including Vaka Afya BatsiHealth, XMarketplace, and Zimpost.

Each of these partners brings unique expertise and resources to the table—ranging from logistics and delivery of medical supplies to facilitating community mobilization and awareness.

The Elim Ruwangwe Community Health Day is more than just a medical outreach—it is a step toward the digital transformation of rural healthcare.

ZimSmart Villages is committed to using technology to connect remote communities with modern healthcare systems.

Through data collection, electronic health records, and digital appointment systems, rural patients will not only access healthcare on the day but also be integrated into a sustainable network for ongoing care.

This model ensures continuity of care—a critical factor in managing chronic diseases and follow-ups for conditions such as cataracts and cancer.

Zimbabwe, like many developing nations, is witnessing a rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.

According to recent statistics, these conditions account for a significant proportion of morbidity and mortality, particularly due to late diagnosis.

By including BP and sugar checks, as well as various cancer screenings, this health day directly targets these silent killers.

Early detection not only improves survival rates but also reduces long-term healthcare costs for both individuals and the nation.

Healthcare is not only about treatment—it is also about empowering people with knowledge.

During the Elim Ruwangwe Community Health Day, healthcare professionals will engage residents in educational sessions on lifestyle diseases, nutrition, and preventive care.

Simple interventions such as adopting a balanced diet, regular exercise, and routine medical checks can drastically reduce the prevalence of many conditions seen in rural areas.

Moreover, the availability of prescribed and reading spectacles will also address the often-overlooked impact of poor vision on productivity, education, and quality of life.

Residents of Ruwangwe and surrounding communities are encouraged to attend the health day in large numbers.

The event is open to men, women, and children, with services tailored to meet the needs of each demographic group.

Those experiencing vision problems, or anyone due for a medical check-up, are particularly urged to take advantage of this opportunity.

Community leaders, churches, and local organizations have been called upon to spread the word, ensuring that the message reaches even the most remote households.

For those seeking more information, organizers can be reached on the following Mobile Contact: +263788331094.

This hotline will offer details on registration, specific services, and any preparatory steps attendees may need to take.

Additionally, the organizers are calling on the private sector and well-wishers to support this initiative, either through sponsorship, provision of medical equipment, or volunteer services.

Collective action remains key in tackling the health disparities faced by rural Zimbabwe.

The Elim Ruwangwe Community Health Day is not just a single event—it is a movement towards health equity and inclusive development.

By focusing on underserved populations, initiatives like this complement national health strategies and align with global goals for universal health coverage.

ZimSmart Villages and Ziso Health have demonstrated that with innovation, partnerships, and a people-centered approach, it is possible to bring healthcare closer to where it is most needed.

As the countdown to 13 September 2025 continues, anticipation grows for the life-changing impact this day will have—not only in restoring sight and screening for diseases but also in igniting hope for a healthier, more resilient Ruwangwe community.
