…as Hon. Sanyatwe Salutes Second Republic for Transformative Rural Energy Sector Rollout

Kazozo – Nyanga North Constituency came alive with celebration yesterday, as the Minister of Energy and Power Development, Hon. July Moyo, officially commissioned Phase One and Two of the Rural Electrification Funded Mangezi–Kazozo–Mapani–Mukunza High Voltage (HV) Line — a transformative infrastructure project that now powers schools, clinics, business centers, and homes across the region.

The event, hosted under the constituency leadership of Hon. Chido Sanyatwe, marked a major milestone in the Government’s rural electrification drive and reaffirmed the Second Republic’s commitment to ensuring that no place and no one is left behind in Zimbabwe’s journey toward inclusive national development.

The newly commissioned HV line stretches across multiple wards in Nyanga North, bringing electricity to key community institutions including Mangezi Primary School, Mangezi Shopping Center, Kazozo Primary and Secondary Schools, Kazozo Business Center, Mukunza Clinic, Mukunza Primary School, Mukunza Shopping Center, and Mapani Shopping Center, among others.

For many residents, this is the first time their villages have been connected to the national power grid — a development expected to boost education, healthcare delivery, entrepreneurship, and overall quality of life.

Addressing a jubilant crowd gathered at Mangezi Primary School, Hon. July Moyo underscored the transformative potential of rural electrification in achieving Vision 2030, which seeks to transform Zimbabwe into an upper middle-income economy by the year 2030.

“Electricity is not just about lighting homes. It is about empowering communities, creating opportunities, and unlocking the full potential of our rural areas. This project is part of our broader national effort to ensure that every citizen, no matter where they live, has access to energy — a key enabler of socio-economic development,” said Hon. Moyo.

He further revealed that the Government, through the Rural Electrification Fund (REF), is celebrating the commissioning of eight similar projects across all the country’s eight rural provinces, symbolizing the nationwide progress in energy infrastructure expansion.

Hon. Chido Sanyatwe, the Member of Parliament for Nyanga North Constituency, expressed heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and the Second Republic for their unwavering commitment to improving rural livelihoods.

“This electrification project is a clear manifestation of the President’s mantra of ‘Leaving No One and No Place Behind.’ Through the Vision 2030 framework and guided by the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and its successor NDS2, we are witnessing tangible development that uplifts communities from the grassroots,” she said.

Hon. Sanyatwe commended the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, the Rural Electrification Fund, local authorities, and traditional leaders in ensuring the project’s successful implementation.

“Electricity will transform our local schools, clinics, and business centers. It will improve healthcare delivery at Mukunza Clinic, enhance learning outcomes for our pupils, and attract small-scale businesses that will drive rural industrialization,” she added.

The commissioning ceremony brought together various arms of Government mandated to provide energy and infrastructure development, including representatives from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), Rural Electrification Fund (REF), Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), and the Ministry of Energy and Power Development.

Each institution echoed the same message — the electrification project aligns perfectly with the President’s Vision 2030 and the energy sector reforms being implemented to ensure sustainable, inclusive, and affordable power access across Zimbabwe.

Officials highlighted how rural electrification is a critical driver in achieving the targets set in NDS1, particularly under the pillar of infrastructure development, energy access, and sustainable economic growth.

The program also dovetails with the Government’s efforts to increase renewable energy capacity, reduce rural–urban disparities, and promote decentralized economic growth.

For local residents, the commissioning of the Mangezi–Kazozo–Mapani–Mukunza HV line has already begun changing lives.

Teachers and pupils at Kazozo Secondary School spoke with excitement about being able to use computers, digital learning tools, and science lab equipment for the first time.

“We can now teach ICT practically instead of just theoretically,” said one teacher. “Electricity has brought a new era for our school. It motivates students and enhances their learning experience.”

At Mukunza Clinic, staff members welcomed the arrival of electricity as a life-saving development. Refrigeration for vaccines, lighting for nighttime deliveries, and the use of modern medical equipment will now be possible.

“For years, we relied on candles and solar lamps. Now we can provide better services, store medicines safely, and attend to patients at night without fear,” said the clinic’s nurse-in-charge.

Local entrepreneurs at the newly powered shopping centers also anticipate growth in business activity. Shops, barbershops, welding services, and small-scale food processors can now operate efficiently, while households can enjoy the comfort and safety of reliable lighting.

Hon. July Moyo emphasized that energy access remains a key pillar of national development.

He noted that Zimbabwe’s rural electrification efforts are not only transforming communities but also positioning the country for sustainable industrialization.

“Through projects like this, we are bridging the development gap between urban and rural areas. The vision of the President is clear — to see every Zimbabwean empowered through access to infrastructure, services, and opportunity,” he said.

The Minister further reaffirmed Government’s commitment to exploring alternative energy sources, including solar and mini-hydro systems, to complement grid-based electrification, especially in remote areas.

“Energy security and sustainability are central to our economic vision. By 2030, we aim to achieve universal electricity access, and this project is a crucial step toward that goal,” he concluded.

The Mangezi–Kazozo–Mapani–Mukunza HV Line stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when vision meets action, and when leadership prioritizes the needs of the people.

For Hon. Chido Sanyatwe and the people of Nyanga North, this project is more than an infrastructure milestone — it is a beacon of empowerment, a tool for transformation, and a testament to national unity under the Second Republic.

Indeed, as Zimbabwe continues its march toward Vision 2030, projects like these light the path forward — illuminating not just homes and institutions, but also the hopes and dreams of a nation determined to rise.
