Marondera – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested a wanted drug dealer, marking another significant milestone in the ongoing fight against illegal drug possession and trafficking.
The suspect, identified as Sydney Mubaiwa Matsikiti, was apprehended at Rudhaka Dombotombo open grounds in Marondera, following a well-coordinated operation by local law enforcement.
According to police reports, Matsikiti was found in possession of a large quantity of illicit substances, confirming his involvement in drug distribution within the community.
During the arrest, officers recovered 126 sachets of dagga, 18 x 100ml bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, and 11 x 100ml bottles of Benylin cough syrup.
These substances are classified as dangerous drugs under Zimbabwean law and are often abused by youths for recreational purposes.
The arrest comes just days after the suspect managed to evade capture in an earlier police operation.
On October 5, 2025, Matsikiti reportedly fled from law enforcement officers, abandoning his Toyota Granvia vehicle in the process.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of additional drugs, including 132 sachets of dagga, 23 x 100ml bottles of Broncleer syrup, and 4 x 100ml bottles of Astra pain syrup.
Police sources confirmed that the latest arrest was the result of intelligence-led investigations and increased patrols aimed at dismantling drug supply networks in Mashonaland East Province.
“We have been monitoring the suspect for some time, and his arrest is part of a broader operation to curb the circulation of dangerous drugs in our communities,” said Mashonaland East police spokesperson.
The ZRP reiterated its commitment to combating the spread of drug and substance abuse, which has become a pressing concern across Zimbabwe.
Authorities have been cracking down on individuals and syndicates involved in the distribution of cough syrups containing codeine, cannabis, and other illicit substances that have flooded local markets, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas.
Community members have welcomed the arrest, describing it as a positive step toward restoring safety and order.
Many residents in Marondera have expressed growing concern over the rise in drug abuse, particularly among young people, which has been linked to increased crime, violence, and social decay.
The police have called upon the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious drug-related activities in their neighborhoods.
“We cannot win this battle alone. The public’s cooperation is crucial in identifying and apprehending those involved in the illegal drug trade,” added the spokesperson.
Drug abuse has become a national crisis, prompting the Government of Zimbabwe to adopt a multi-sectoral approach that brings together law enforcement, health authorities, and community organizations.
National campaigns under the banner “War Against Drug and Substance Abuse” have been rolled out to raise awareness, strengthen rehabilitation programs, and tighten border controls to prevent smuggling.
In recent months, the ZRP has intensified its operations, leading to multiple arrests of drug dealers, suppliers, and smugglers across the country.
The seizure of dangerous drugs like Broncleer and dagga has disrupted several supply chains that have been fueling addiction, especially among young adults.
Authorities have also warned that individuals found guilty of possessing or trafficking dangerous drugs face severe penalties, including imprisonment, as stipulated under Zimbabwe’s Dangerous Drugs Act and Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
As investigations continue, Sydney Mubaiwa Matsikiti remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon to face multiple charges, including unlawful possession and distribution of dangerous drugs, as well as resisting arrest.
The ZRP has reaffirmed its stance that no stone will be left unturned in the quest to ensure a drug-free Zimbabwe, where communities can thrive without the scourge of substance abuse.
Members of the public are urged to report drug-related crimes or suspicious activities to their nearest police station or call the ZRP hotline.
Together, citizens and law enforcement can work hand in hand to protect the nation’s future and uphold the rule of law.
