Doha, Qatar – His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has arrived in Doha, Qatar, where he is attending the Second World Summit for Social Development, a high-level meeting convened by the United Nations to deliberate on strategies for advancing global social progress, inclusion, and sustainable development.
The summit, taking place under the theme “Building Inclusive Societies for a Sustainable Future,” has drawn together Heads of State and Government, international development partners, policymakers, and civil society leaders from across the world.
It provides a platform for participants to review progress made since the inaugural World Summit for Social Development held in Copenhagen in 1995, and to chart renewed commitments toward eradicating poverty, promoting equality, and strengthening social protection systems globally.
The Second World Summit for Social Development seeks to assess how countries have implemented the principles adopted three decades ago — particularly the prioritization of people-centered development, social justice, and shared prosperity.
This year’s gathering also comes at a time when the global community is intensifying efforts to recover from the economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, while addressing emerging challenges such as climate change, digital inequality, and unemployment.
Deliberations in Doha are expected to focus on policies and partnerships that can help nations achieve more inclusive forms of growth.
The agenda includes strengthening access to quality education and healthcare, expanding opportunities for youth and women, and ensuring that technological advancement contributes to equitable social outcomes.
Delegates will also exchange experiences on national development strategies, with an emphasis on building resilient communities capable of adapting to global economic shifts while maintaining social cohesion and dignity for all citizens.
President Mnangagwa’s participation in the summit reaffirms Zimbabwe’s steadfast commitment to inclusive development, consistent with the country’s national vision of becoming an upper middle-income society by 2030.
Under the Second Republic, the Government has implemented policies that seek to promote equitable development through devolution, rural industrialization, and the expansion of social protection measures to uplift all segments of society.
Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which operationalizes Vision 2030, emphasizes people-centered governance and sustainable growth driven by innovation, productivity, and social inclusion.
Through targeted programs such as Pfumvudza/Intwasa, rural electrification, and the construction of dams and schools, Zimbabwe continues to advance its agenda of ensuring that no one and no community is left behind.
Officials accompanying the President highlighted that the summit offers a valuable opportunity for Zimbabwe to share its development experiences and to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with development partners and fellow nations.
The discussions are expected to open new avenues for collaboration in key areas such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and social welfare.
The Doha summit reaffirms the central role of multilateralism in addressing today’s social and economic challenges.
Through dialogue and cooperation, participating countries are expected to advance a renewed global consensus on reducing inequality and promoting social justice as fundamental pillars of sustainable development.
The United Nations has emphasized that inclusive societies are essential for achieving lasting peace and stability.
In this regard, the Second World Summit for Social Development seeks to reinvigorate the global partnership for sustainable progress, ensuring that social policies complement economic strategies and that development is rooted in fairness and equity.
President Mnangagwa’s engagement at this high-level forum reflects Zimbabwe’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to the global pursuit of a more just, inclusive, and prosperous world.
The President’s attendance in Doha symbolizes Zimbabwe’s active re-engagement with the international community and its dedication to advancing the objectives of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
His participation underscores the country’s belief in cooperation, dialogue, and shared responsibility in building a world where all people enjoy dignity, opportunity, and hope.
As deliberations continue in Qatar, the Second World Summit for Social Development stands as a reminder that sustainable progress is achievable only through unity of purpose and commitment to humanity’s collective well-being.
President Mnangagwa’s presence among global leaders reflects Zimbabwe’s determination to be part of that shared journey toward inclusive growth and social justice for all.
The President is accompanied by senior Government officials, among them the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon. Prof. Amon Murwira, and other dignitaries.
In Qatar, the President Dr. Mnangagwa is expected to engage in several high-level meetings on the sidelines of the summit, aimed at strengthening cooperation and deepening bilateral relations between Zimbabwe, the State of Qatar, and other participating nations.
