In a significant step towards deepening international cooperation in the field of sports and cultural exchange, the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Hon. Ambassador Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, today met with Mr. Alexander Nikitin, the State Secretary for Sports of the Russian Federation.

The bilateral discussions were held on the sidelines of the prestigious 2025 “Russia – Country of Sports” Forum, an annual global gathering that brings together policymakers, athletes, and sports administrators from across the world to explore new pathways for the development of sport.

The landmark meeting culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Russian Federation, marking a new era of cooperation and mutual partnership in the areas of sport, recreation, and athletic exchange.

The agreement underscores both nations’ shared commitment to using sport as a tool for unity, development, and people-to-people engagement.

The discussions between the two delegations reflected a spirit of mutual respect and strategic foresight, focusing on establishing a sustainable framework for collaboration across various sporting disciplines, infrastructure development, and human capacity building.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Sanyatwe highlighted the importance of sports diplomacy as a catalyst for stronger bilateral relations. He described the MoU as a “historic and visionary step” that aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader strategy to position sports as a driver of economic growth, youth empowerment, and international cooperation.

“This Memorandum of Understanding with the Russian Federation is not merely a document of intent, but a living framework that will transform the way our two countries engage through sport,” said Minister Sanyatwe. “We are creating a bridge of friendship and shared opportunity—where athletes, coaches, and administrators from both nations can exchange expertise, knowledge, and passion for the game. Together, we envision a future where sport is both a unifying force and a vehicle for development.” The Sports Minister added.

For Russia, which has a long and distinguished record in international sport, the partnership with Zimbabwe represents an opportunity to expand its cooperation footprint in Africa.

Mr. Nikitin commended the Zimbabwean government for its dedication to sports development and expressed optimism that the MoU will lead to tangible projects that benefit athletes and young people in both countries.

“Our cooperation with Zimbabwe reflects our strong belief that sport is a universal language—one that transcends geography, culture, and history,” Mr. Nikitin stated.

“Through this partnership, we hope to share Russia’s experience in sports science, infrastructure, and athlete development, while also learning from Zimbabwe’s resilience, talent, and growing sporting culture.” He added.

The newly signed MoU provides for the establishment of joint programs that will see Zimbabwean athletes, coaches, and sports administrators receive training and exposure in Russia’s renowned sports institutions.

It also opens the door for the exchange of technical expertise in areas such as sports medicine, coaching education, infrastructure development, and anti-doping programs.

Additionally, the agreement lays the foundation for collaboration in organizing joint sporting events, tournaments, and youth exchange initiatives.

These activities are designed to foster friendship, cultural understanding, and mutual respect between the people of Zimbabwe and Russia.

Observers note that the MoU complements Zimbabwe’s National Sports and Recreation Policy, which emphasizes international partnerships as a means of promoting excellence and broad-based participation in sports.

With this new cooperation, Zimbabwe stands to benefit from Russia’s world-class sporting technologies and methodologies, while Russia gains a valuable partner in Southern Africa for future regional sports cooperation.

Beyond the professional and competitive aspects, both countries underscored the importance of sport as a tool for social cohesion and youth empowerment.

Minister Lt. General Rtd. Sanyatwe emphasized that the partnership aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision of “leaving no one and no place behind,” as articulated in Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

“Sport and recreation are not just about competition,” Minister Lt. General Rtd. Sanyatwe remarked. “They are about building stronger communities, promoting healthy lifestyles, and nurturing discipline and unity among our young people. Through this collaboration with Russia, we will be creating more opportunities for youth participation, talent identification, and empowerment—particularly in rural and underprivileged communities.”

The Minister further noted that the partnership could also lead to investment in sporting infrastructure such as stadiums, high-performance centers, and community sports facilities.

He expressed confidence that this would not only enhance Zimbabwe’s sports performance but also contribute to job creation and tourism development.

For Russia, which continues to strengthen its diplomatic and economic engagement with Africa, this MoU with Zimbabwe is consistent with its broader vision of deepening people-to-people relations and cultural diplomacy.

The Russian side indicated interest in hosting joint sports science conferences, coaching clinics, and cultural festivals that celebrate the shared values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

Mrs. Alina Stebneva, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, echoed the sentiment of optimism, noting that both countries share a rich history of resilience and determination.

“We see in Zimbabwe a partner that values hard work, talent, and ambition. These are the same qualities that define our sporting philosophy in Russia. Our cooperation will go beyond competition—it will build bridges of friendship and solidarity.” She said.

The signing ceremony was also an opportunity for both sides to discuss potential collaboration in arts and culture, particularly in areas where sport intersects with creative expression.

This approach reflects a holistic vision that integrates sport, culture, and recreation as essential components of human development and diplomacy.

As the meeting concluded, both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the Memorandum of Understanding is implemented effectively and that it yields tangible results.

Lt. General Rtd. Sanyatwe expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Russia for their continued friendship and support, describing the engagement as a “milestone that will be remembered as the day Zimbabwe and Russia took their sporting relationship to the next level.”

Indeed, the 2025 “Russia – Country of Sports” Forum provided an ideal backdrop for this diplomatic achievement, serving as a symbol of global unity through sport.

For Zimbabwe, the agreement comes at a time when the nation is investing heavily in talent development and sports infrastructure, with the aim of reclaiming its place among Africa’s leading sporting nations.

As both nations look ahead, the partnership between Zimbabwe and Russia stands as a testament to the power of sport to transcend borders and build enduring relationships.

It is a story of collaboration, resilience, and shared vision—a story that will undoubtedly inspire generations of athletes and sports enthusiasts across continents.

With the ink now dry on this historic MoU, Zimbabwe and Russia step confidently into a new chapter of friendship—one defined by cooperation, mutual growth, and the boundless spirit of sport.
