Zimbabwe Ushers in New Era for Media with Landmark Policy Launch

State House, Harare – Zimbabwe marked a significant turning point in its media landscape with the official launch of the Zimbabwe Media Policy.

The momentous occasion, presided over by His Excellency, President Dr. E. D. Mnangagwa, took place at State House in Harare, drawing together key figures from government, the media fraternity, and various stakeholders.

The policy arrives at a critical juncture, acknowledging the profound transformations sweeping through the global and local media ecosystems, largely propelled by the relentless march of emerging technologies and the burgeoning influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“I am honoured to officiate at this occasion, marking the launch of the Zimbabwe Media Policy,” President Mnangagwa stated.

“This policy comes at a time when both the global and local media ecosystems are witnessing an unprecedented transformation, ushered by emerging technologies.” The President added.

The President eloquently elaborated on the transformative power of AI, noting its revolutionary impact across social and economic sectors, with the media industry standing as a prime example.

He acknowledged how AI has fundamentally altered the core processes of journalism, while also stressing the importance of addressing the potential pitfalls associated with these advancements, particularly concerning accuracy and ethical considerations.

Minister Muswere, in his remarks prior to the President’s address, provided context and insights into the rationale and objectives underpinning the Zimbabwe Media Policy.

He articulated the government’s vision for a media sector that is not only technologically advanced but also responsible, ethical, and deeply rooted in the national interest.

The Minister emphasized the need for a policy that fosters innovation while safeguarding the integrity of information and promoting inclusivity.

The Zimbabwe Media Policy outlines several key pillars aimed at creating a conducive environment for a thriving and responsible media.

These are expected to include provisions for promoting Media Pluralism and Diversity.

President Mnangagwa further called upon the media to embrace its crucial role in advancing Zimbabwe’s national interests on the global stage. He urged content creators and stakeholders to proactively showcase the nation’s natural and cultural treasures, leveraging modern technologies and digital platforms to craft compelling narratives and imagery that attract local and foreign capital, investments, and tourism.

“Further, I challenge our media to be also aware of the role it plays in advancing our national interests within the comity of nations through purposeful and focused engagements, guided by our Foreign Policy,” the President asserted.

“I call upon our content creators and all the stakeholders in the sector to help create and showcase our natural and cultural treasures. Riding on modern technologies, as well as leveraging digital platforms, I urge you to craft appealing messaging and imagery that attracts both local and foreign capital, investments and tourism, among other socio-economic benefits.” He added.

In his concluding remarks, President Mnangagwa reiterated the vital role of a responsible, modern, and accountable media in fostering a vibrant constitutional democracy, facilitating nation-building, and promoting people-centered development.

He expressed confidence that the Zimbabwe Media Policy represents a bold step towards ensuring that the sector remains a source of enlightenment, empowerment, progress, unity, and sustainable development for Zimbabwe.

“In conclusion, I reiterate that a responsible, modern and accountable media is vital for a vibrant constitutional democracy, nation-building and the promotion of people-centred development,” President Mnangagwa affirmed.

“Through this Zimbabwe Media Policy, we have taken a bold decision to ensure that the sector remains a source of enlightenment, empowerment, progress, unity and the sustainable of development of our motherland, Zimbabwe.”

With these powerful words, President Mnangagwa officially declared the Zimbabwe Media Policy launched, ushering in what many hope will be a new era of growth, innovation, and responsibility for the country’s media landscape.
