MASVINGO – Mucheke Stadium Multipurpose Courts have officially been commissioned by the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Hon. Lt. General (Rtd.) Ambassador Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, marking another significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s drive to modernise sporting infrastructure while promoting youth empowerment, disability inclusion and community participation in sport.
The commissioning ceremony, held on 27 July 2026, attracted Government officials, local authorities, sporting organisations, community leaders and residents who gathered to witness the unveiling of one of Masvingo’s newest sporting facilities. The occasion highlighted Government’s continued commitment to expanding access to quality sporting infrastructure across Zimbabwe.
The newly completed Mucheke Stadium Multipurpose Courts represent a major investment in grassroots sport and recreation. Designed to accommodate several sporting disciplines including tennis, volleyball, netball and other indoor and outdoor recreational activities, the facility is expected to become a vibrant centre for talent identification, youth development and community sporting excellence.
Addressing guests during the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Lt. General (Rtd.) Ambassador Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe said the completion of the project reflects Government’s determination to ensure every province benefits from modern sporting infrastructure capable of nurturing talent and improving community wellbeing.
He noted that sport is more than recreation, describing it as an important pillar for national development, social cohesion, healthy living and economic empowerment. He applauded the City of Masvingo for prioritising infrastructure that benefits all members of society, including persons living with disabilities.
The Minister stressed that investment in modern sporting facilities creates opportunities for young people to develop their abilities, compete at higher levels and contribute meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s sporting future. He encouraged youths to take full advantage of the new facility by embracing discipline, hard work and excellence in sport.
The commissioning comes as Zimbabwe continues implementing the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which identifies sports, recreation, arts and culture as important sectors for social transformation and economic development. Government continues to invest in infrastructure that empowers communities while creating opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and youth participation.
The Mucheke Stadium Multipurpose Courts have also been designed with inclusivity in mind. Accessibility features incorporated into the facility ensure that persons living with disabilities are able to participate fully in sporting activities. The development demonstrates Zimbabwe’s commitment to ensuring that no one and no place is left behind in national development.
Local authorities believe the courts will become an important venue for schools, community clubs, sporting associations and provincial competitions. The facility is expected to host coaching clinics, youth tournaments, disability sports programmes and recreational activities throughout the year.
The investment is also expected to generate wider economic benefits for Masvingo through increased sporting tourism, accommodation demand, transport services, food vendors and small businesses that benefit whenever sporting events are hosted in the city.
Community leaders welcomed the commissioning, describing the facility as a long overdue investment that will provide children and young people with safe spaces to train, compete and develop their sporting talents. Parents and coaches expressed optimism that improved infrastructure will inspire more youths to participate in organised sport while reducing social challenges such as drug and substance abuse.
The City of Masvingo has indicated that the new courts form part of broader efforts to transform Mucheke Stadium into a modern sporting complex capable of hosting provincial, national and regional competitions. Such developments position Masvingo as one of Zimbabwe’s emerging sporting destinations.
The project also supports President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which seeks to improve the quality of life for Zimbabweans through strategic infrastructure development, inclusive economic growth and expanded opportunities for young people. Modern sporting facilities remain central to Government’s vision of producing internationally competitive athletes while strengthening grassroots participation.
Hon. Lt. General (Rtd.) Ambassador Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe reiterated that Government will continue investing in sports infrastructure across the country because sport contributes significantly to education, health, national unity and economic development. He urged communities to safeguard the facility and ensure it benefits both present and future generations.
The commissioning of the Mucheke Stadium Multipurpose Courts adds to Zimbabwe’s growing list of modern sporting facilities aimed at expanding access to quality recreation while creating pathways for excellence in sport. It also reinforces Government’s commitment to building stronger, healthier and more inclusive communities through strategic investment in public infrastructure.
With the commemorative plaque officially unveiled and the courts declared open, attention now shifts to ensuring maximum utilisation of the facility. Schools, sporting associations, youth organisations and local communities are expected to begin using the courts immediately, ushering in a new era for sport and recreation in Masvingo Province.
