Sports Buzz – Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Amb. Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to transforming Zimbabwe’s sporting sector into a key pillar of national development through sustained investment in modern sports infrastructure, institutional reforms and youth empowerment programmes.
Addressing participants during the National Vocational Training Institutions Sports Gala at Kaguvi Vocational Training Centre, Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Amb. Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe said the Second Republic, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency President Dr. ED. Mnangagwa, continues to recognise sport as an important catalyst for economic growth, youth empowerment, social cohesion and national development. He said the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture is implementing programmes that directly support the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), the roadmap guiding Zimbabwe towards the attainment of Vision 2030, which seeks to transform the country into an upper-middle-income economy.
The Minister said Government’s investment in sport extends beyond competitive events, positioning the sector as a strategic economic asset capable of creating employment, stimulating tourism and improving community livelihoods.
“Our commitment remains unwavering in investing in modern sports infrastructure, enhancing governance systems and creating an enabling environment for athletes, administrators and sporting institutions to thrive,” said Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Amb. Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe.
He explained that under NDS2, the Ministry is prioritising the construction, rehabilitation and modernisation of sporting facilities across Zimbabwe to ensure equitable access to quality infrastructure for communities in both urban and rural areas.
The Government’s approach, he said, seeks to ensure that no young Zimbabwean is left behind, with increased opportunities for participation in sport regardless of geographical location or socio-economic background. This inclusive model aligns with President Mnangagwa’s people-centred development philosophy, which places youth empowerment at the heart of national transformation.
Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Amb. Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe also highlighted the importance of strengthening governance within sporting institutions, saying accountability, transparency and professionalism remain essential pillars for sustainable growth.
He noted that Zimbabwe is implementing reforms designed to improve institutional capacity while safeguarding the integrity of sporting competitions.
“By implementing robust monitoring and evaluation systems, enhancing the capacity of sports administrators and athletes and strengthening compliance and investigative mechanisms to safeguard the integrity of our competitions, we are laying a solid foundation for sporting excellence,” he said.
The Minister said effective governance would improve investor confidence and create favourable conditions for increased private sector participation in sports development. He added that stronger governance frameworks will also enhance Zimbabwe’s reputation within regional and international sporting bodies.
The reforms complement the broader governance agenda being implemented by the Second Republic under President Dr. ED. Mnangagwa, whose administration continues to promote efficiency, transparency and accountability across Government institutions in pursuit of Vision 2030.
Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Amb. Sanyatwe further underscored the significant economic contribution that sport can make to Zimbabwe’s development, saying investment in sporting facilities and programmes has multiplier effects that extend well beyond the playing field.
He said the sports industry has the capacity to generate employment opportunities, support local businesses, attract domestic and international sporting events, promote tourism and contribute meaningfully to national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The Minister observed that as Zimbabwe continues improving sporting infrastructure, the country will become increasingly competitive in hosting regional and continental tournaments, thereby unlocking new investment opportunities and boosting local economies.
Grassroots sport remains another critical priority for the Ministry.
Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Amb. Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe said Government is expanding grassroots talent identification programmes aimed at nurturing future national athletes from an early age.
He said the Ministry is working with schools, vocational training institutions, communities and sporting associations to identify promising talent while ensuring that young people have access to quality coaching, facilities and competitive opportunities.
The National Vocational Training Institutions Sports Gala, he said, demonstrates how collaboration among Government ministries and educational institutions contributes towards achieving national development goals.
The Minister commended the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training together with the Vocational Institutions Sports Association (VISA) for successfully organising the national tournament.
He described the event as an important platform for discovering sporting talent, promoting healthy lifestyles and strengthening national unity among young Zimbabweans drawn from different provinces.
“Your dedication, meticulous planning and commitment have transformed this sports gala into a significant platform for youth development, talent identification and national unity. Beyond competition, the event demonstrates the positive impact of collaboration between Government, educational institutions and stakeholders in advancing the objectives of Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2,” said Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Amb. Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe.
The Minister said partnerships between Government, educational institutions, sporting associations and the private sector remain essential for building a vibrant sporting ecosystem capable of producing world-class athletes while contributing to Zimbabwe’s socio-economic transformation.
He emphasised that sustainable investment, improved governance and continued institutional collaboration will ensure long-term success for Zimbabwe’s sporting sector.
The National Development Strategy 2 identifies sport, recreation, arts and culture as important sectors capable of contributing significantly to inclusive economic growth, employment creation and national identity. Through deliberate policy interventions and strategic investments, Government seeks to maximise these sectors’ contribution towards national prosperity.
President Dr. ED. Mnangagwa has consistently emphasised that youth are central to Zimbabwe’s development agenda. Investments in sporting infrastructure and youth programmes therefore complement broader Government initiatives aimed at equipping young Zimbabweans with the skills, opportunities and platforms needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
As Zimbabwe accelerates implementation of NDS2, the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture continues positioning sport as a strategic driver of economic diversification, social inclusion and national pride.
Hon. Lt. Gen. Rtd. Amb. Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe reiterated that sustained investment in infrastructure, sound governance systems, talent development and strategic partnerships will enable Zimbabwe to realise its sporting potential while supporting the country’s march towards Vision 2030.
With Government maintaining a strong focus on infrastructure development, institutional reforms and youth empowerment under the leadership of His Excellency President Dr. ED. Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s sporting sector is poised to become an increasingly important contributor to national economic growth, social cohesion and international competitiveness.
