HARARE – Kuwadzana Police Station has taken a major step towards becoming a reality after Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Honourable Chido Sanyatwe, officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new police facility in Harare. The project marks another milestone in the Government’s ongoing efforts to modernise policing infrastructure, strengthen public security and improve service delivery under the Second Republic.
The new Kuwadzana Police Station will house modern office blocks, police accommodation, detention cells and other essential operational facilities designed to improve the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s capacity to provide efficient and professional services to residents of Kuwadzana and surrounding communities. The ceremony was attended by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Ambassador Raphael T. Faranisi, Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba, senior police officers, Government officials, business leaders, community representatives and residents.
Speaking during the ceremony, Deputy Minister Honourable Chido Sanyatwe said the groundbreaking of the Kuwadzana Police Station reflects the development philosophy championed by His Excellency, President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, whose administration continues to prioritise modern infrastructure, improved public service delivery and citizen security. She said the project is fully aligned with the Government’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which emphasises strengthening governance institutions, expanding critical public infrastructure and enhancing peace and security as key enablers towards achieving Vision 2030 of transforming Zimbabwe into an empowered and prosperous upper middle-income economy.
The construction of the new police station is expected to significantly improve policing services in one of Harare’s largest residential suburbs. For years, residents have relied on facilities operating from converted residential buildings that no longer adequately meet the demands of the growing population. Once completed, the purpose-built station will provide officers with modern working conditions while improving accessibility to police services for thousands of residents.
Government officials said the project forms part of the Second Republic’s broader infrastructure development programme aimed at strengthening institutions responsible for maintaining peace, law and order throughout Zimbabwe. Investments in modern police infrastructure are expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance crime prevention, reduce emergency response times and strengthen community policing initiatives.
The planned Kuwadzana Police Station will include modern administration offices, detention cells, accommodation for police officers, interview rooms, public reception areas, secure evidence storage facilities and other critical infrastructure necessary for professional policing. Authorities believe the upgraded facilities will create a more conducive working environment for police officers while ensuring members of the public receive quality services in a safe and modern environment.
Deputy Minister Sanyatwe commended the collaboration between Government, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and private sector partners who are supporting the construction of the project. She noted that public-private partnerships remain essential in accelerating national development and delivering quality infrastructure that directly benefits communities.
She further encouraged the corporate sector to continue investing in projects that improve the lives of Zimbabweans, saying secure communities create an environment that promotes business growth, investment and sustainable economic development.
Permanent Secretary Ambassador Raphael T. Faranisi said Government remains committed to ensuring that law enforcement agencies are equipped with the infrastructure and resources necessary to effectively discharge their constitutional mandate. He said modern facilities are essential in improving service delivery while supporting professional policing standards.
Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba reaffirmed the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s commitment to community-oriented policing, saying the new Kuwadzana Police Station will strengthen relations between the police and residents while enhancing crime prevention efforts across western Harare.
He urged members of the public to continue working closely with law enforcement agencies by reporting criminal activities, protecting public infrastructure and participating in community policing programmes. According to police leadership, effective crime prevention depends on cooperation between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve.
Residents who attended the groundbreaking ceremony welcomed the project, expressing optimism that the modern police station will improve security, reduce crime and provide quicker access to essential policing services. Community leaders described the development as long overdue given the rapid population growth experienced in Kuwadzana over the past decades.
The project also complements Government’s national infrastructure modernisation programme under National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which identifies peace, security, institutional capacity and public service delivery as critical pillars for national development. Through NDS2, the Government is investing in roads, schools, hospitals, police stations and other public infrastructure that supports inclusive economic growth and improved living standards.
Under the leadership of His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe has accelerated infrastructure development across multiple sectors as part of efforts to realise Vision 2030, which seeks to transform the country into an upper middle-income economy through modern infrastructure, industrialisation, innovation and improved governance.
Security experts note that purpose-built police stations contribute significantly to operational effectiveness by improving evidence management, victim support services, officer welfare and emergency response capabilities. Modern facilities also enhance public confidence in law enforcement institutions by providing accessible and professional environments for service delivery.
The construction of the Kuwadzana Police Station is expected to commence immediately following the groundbreaking ceremony, with Government expressing confidence that the project will be completed within schedule and according to the highest construction standards.
Once operational, the station will serve as a strategic policing hub for Kuwadzana, Dzivarasekwa and surrounding areas, improving public safety while supporting economic activity through enhanced security.
The groundbreaking ceremony therefore represents more than the beginning of another construction project. It demonstrates the Second Republic’s commitment to implementing National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) while delivering on the promises of Vision 2030 through strategic investments in public infrastructure.
