NYANGA – A transformative skills development programme has begun taking shape in Nyanga North Constituency following the donation of carpentry equipment and sewing machines to schools under a pilot project being implemented through a partnership between the constituency and the Community Development Empowerment Organization (CDEO).
The initiative, which seeks to promote vocational skills and entrepreneurship among learners, saw Kute High School in Ward 14 receiving three carpentry kits and a toolbox, while Kagore Primary School received five sewing machines comprising two manual machines, two electric machines and one jersey machine.
The programme is expected to become a cornerstone of community empowerment and is set to be rolled out to more primary and secondary schools across the constituency.
Empowering Learners Through Practical Skills
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Nyanga North Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Hon. Chido Sanyatwe, applauded the Community Development Empowerment Organization for spearheading a programme that equips young people with practical skills and enhances self-reliance.
She described the initiative as a key milestone in promoting vocational education and creating opportunities for learners to become entrepreneurs and job creators.
“We appreciate this initiative and the partnership with the Community Development Empowerment Organization. It is our hope that this programme will be expanded to cover the entire constituency so that all primary and secondary schools benefit,” said Hon. Sanyatwe.
The legislator noted that practical skills such as carpentry and tailoring are increasingly becoming essential in building sustainable livelihoods and reducing unemployment among school leavers.
Pilot Project Set for Constituency-Wide Expansion
According to Hon. Sanyatwe, the donation represents the beginning of a broader programme aimed at introducing technical and vocational skills development in schools throughout Nyanga North.
She called upon development partners and stakeholders to support the expansion of the initiative to ensure that every ward benefits from similar projects.
“This programme has the potential to transform schools into centres of innovation and entrepreneurship. Equipping learners with practical skills prepares them for life beyond the classroom and contributes to community development,” she said.
Education experts have increasingly emphasized the importance of vocational training in enhancing employability and fostering innovation among young people.
Supporting Vision 2030 and the Second Republic’s Development Agenda
Hon. Sanyatwe said the initiative aligns with the vision of the Second Republic under the leadership of President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, whose Vision 2030 agenda seeks to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy through industrialisation, innovation and skills development.
She noted that the project complements Government efforts under heritage-based education and Education 5.0, which emphasize teaching, research, innovation, industrialization and community service.
“The programme ties in perfectly with the developmental vision of His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa. Skills development and empowerment remain key pillars in building prosperous communities,” she said.
Kute High School Benefits From Carpentry Equipment
Teachers and school authorities at Kute High School welcomed the donation of carpentry kits and a toolbox, saying the equipment would significantly enhance practical learning.
The school is expected to use the equipment to train learners in woodworking, furniture making and other technical skills that can create income-generating opportunities in the future.
Community members described the donation as a game-changer that will inspire innovation among students while promoting technical education.
Kagore Primary School Receives Sewing Machines
At Kagore Primary School, excitement was evident following the arrival of five sewing machines that include manual and electric models together with a jersey machine.
The equipment is expected to strengthen practical lessons and provide learners with early exposure to tailoring and garment-making skills.
Parents and teachers said the donation would contribute towards nurturing creativity and entrepreneurship among pupils while preparing them for future opportunities.
“The machines will help learners acquire skills that can empower them economically and support their families and communities in the future,” said one community member.
